College of Early Childhood Educators Launches Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice

TORONTO, March 9 – In a historic event for Ontario’s early childhood education profession, the College of Early Childhood Educators (the College) has established a code of ethics and standards of practice for the profession.

The College is Canada’s first professional self-regulatory body for early childhood educators, formed to protect the public interest and focused on quality and standards in the practice of early childhood education. The Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice came into force on February 28, 2011.

Taken together, the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice define and describe the professional knowledge, expertise, ethical values and behaviours required of registered early childhood educators (RECEs).

“For the first time, early childhood educators have formal ethical and professional standards that articulate the knowledge, skills and ethical values that are inherent to the important work they do every day,” said Lois Mahon, RECE, President of the College. “These standards express expectations for which it is reasonable to hold members of the profession accountable.”

The standards were developed over a period of 18 months in consultation with RECEs, employers, post secondary institutions, parents and other stakeholders in the early learning sector.

The Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice publication is available on the College’s website,  www.collegeofece.on.ca.
