Early Childhood Education Sector Gathers for Symposium on Leadership

2013-09-27

TORONTO, September 27, 2013 – Over 200 professionals in the field of early childhood education are set to attend the first Leadership Symposium hosted by the College of Early Childhood Educators in Toronto, ON today.

Attendees will hear from provincial, national and international leaders about the importance of leadership in the field of early childhood education and participants will view the debut of a video presentation entitled “Leading in the New Reality: Strengthening Early Childhood Education through Leadership”.

“ Leadership in the early childhood education profession is fundamental to the provision of quality early learning and care environments for children,” said Lois Mahon, RECE, President of the College. “Leadership must be nurtured, supported and recognized so that the promise of early learning for the future well-being of children can be realized.”

The Leadership Symposium will also mark the launch of the College’s Leadership Pilot project, which will see 25 registered early childhood educators (RECEs) take part in a nine-month learning program designed to enhance their leadership capacity. Feedback from the participants and their six mentors, who are also RECEs, will inform the development of tools and resources for a continuous professional learning program for all members of the College.

“Through these programs we hope that we can shine the spotlight on both the existing expertise and the enormous potential for intentional leadership that we believe lies latent in the sector,” added Mahon.
